A recipe

I’m here!

Doing my best to keep busy but definitely suffering from blog (and fast computer) withdrawal.

I had a great but exhausting weekend. Saturday and Sunday were spent in the city for a good friend’s bachelorette party. Our hotel was right next to Ground Zero which was pretty interesting as I had never been down there before. It was a fun weekend with lots of indulgences.

Having wrapped up me first partial week not working, it was great timing to force me in to a rest day. I spun on Tuesday, ran and used the TRX on Wednesday, boxed on Thursday, spin and upper body on Friday and then taught on Saturday. Phew. I’m tired just typing that. What else is a girl to do with lots of free time?

So to the title of this post. DJ does most of the cooking in our house but tonight it was on me. I used a recipe from Gywneth Paltrow. It was for salmon but I used swordfish. Really it’s just a sauce/marinade. Soooooo good.

Sriracha and lime sauce
Juice and zest of half a lime ( just realized I didn’t use the zest…oops)
1 tbsp maple syrup
1.5 tsp sriracha sauce
.5 tsp course salt

Whisk all together and then spread over the protein of your choice.  Cook as directed. That’s it!

I didn’t have maple syrup so I used good old Mrs. Buttersworth…don’t laugh. It did the trick.

This definitely has some heat so if you don’t like spice, stay away.

I’m off to relax for the night. Hope you had a lovely Monday!!

A little less of me…maybe

I am here. Sorry for going a bit MIA.

I had mentioned that there was some instability at work due to an acquisition. Well, as a result of the fact that the acquiring company had no interest in the products I manage, I was called in to a meeting yesterday and was told that they were letting me go.

So once again, jessica has been laid off. That’s three times in the past 4 years. I think that’s pretty messed up.

But, it is what it is. As far as I’m concerned, my only option is to stay positive and believe that things will work out as they’re meant to.

So what did I do today? Hit the gym around 9:30, and then hit the library to use their computers to do some job hunting. After that I went home, grabbed the Minnie dog and took her to the dog park. I wrapped up my day reading on the deck in the sun. It was quite nice.

So the posts may be sporadic as my home computer is old and slow.

But I’m here, staying positive and posting when I can. Till then…

A little break

So it seems that I took a little break from the good old blog.  Not intentional, but I suppose I didn’t have much to write about.

So let’s see…the weekend seems like a distant memory at this time.

Friday was an uneventful day.  I went to boxing in the morning, then to work, then home at the end of the day.  That was it.  Oh yeah, picked up sushi for dinner.  Yum!

Saturday I taught in the AM.  I put together the music for you, but the ride itself is in the car and I don’t feel like running out to get it.  If anyone is interested in the details, let me know and I’ll gladly provide them.

spin - april 19 13

The three songs in color were loosely dedicated to the events in Boston this past week.  The first one being a bit obvious and the following two being more about Freedom/Patriotism than Boston.  I think it worked.

There are a couple of random songs in there, so I’ll throw up some youtube videos at the end of this post. (Sunchyme is apparently by Dario G, not Diario, oops!)

Class started out with a little drama and “Mean Instructor Jessica” made an appearance.  Honestly, I wasn’t all that mean, but I was tired of dealing with BS.  One woman (a regular) had saved a bike for another woman.  At 9:59 that woman was not there, so the saving woman removed her bag from the bike.  At the same time, I let the waitlist folks come in and one guy chose that bike.  He set it up, hopped on and started pedaling.  At this time, the woman who the bike was saved for came in and apparently told the man that it was “her bike”.  Um, no.  He started to gather his stuff and then I told him that no, he did not have to move.  There was another bike available and this woman would have to take it.  Really folks?  I don’t care if you spin every single day, rules still apply.

Thanks for letting me vent. 🙂

After class Miss Minnie had a play date with another dog named Rosie.  They ran and played and it was great.  Pup was pooped.

I snapped this photo of her lying in the backseat on the way home.  What makes me laugh is that to me, it looks like a photo shoot setting when in fact it’s just a sheet draped over my backseat.

Saturday night we went to a BBQ at a friend’s house and I ate WAY TOO MUCH.  Gross.  I also partook in some very delicious sangria.

Sunday morning we were up early to hit up some tag sales and garage sales.  Does anyone else LOVE going to these sales?  My parents always did the tag/garage/estate sale thing, so I guess it’s in my genes.

We didn’t have a ton of luck, but did manage to score two mini muffin tins, stemless wineglasses, a Giants ornament, and a pasta maker; all for $15.  Woohoo!

I had a bridal shower to attend in the afternoon and when I got home we set out to make pasta.

The problem with making pasta is that it needs to sit somewhere until you’re ready to cook it.  We didn’t think of that so we had to get creative.

It might be hard to tell, but we propped a skewer up between our SodaStream and the Vitamix.  Ghetto pasta!

Overall it tasted good.  DJ got a little overzealous and decided to cut the pasta himself, which resulted in thicker pasta, which when cooked, became super thick.  However it still tasted great.  He also experimented a bit with crab ravioli.

So for our first attempt, I’d say it was pretty successful…and kind of fun.

Yesterday I took a sick day and here I am today.  Class tonight. It’s cold and a bit gray so I’m hoping that helps the numbers.

Have a great day!  Have you ever made pasta?  Do you use a recipe?  What’s your favorite pasta shape?  (mine is spaghetti)

Here are the youtube clips.

Mic check

There are words that people use in emails that are frequently spelled wrong.

For example….mic (usually spelled mike) and antsy (often spelled ancy).  Random, yes, but I thought of this as I was typing up the subject using the word “mic”.  It’s short for microphone, not mikerophone.  Am I an a$$?

But I digress.

I use a mic for teaching spinning.  I’ve found that about half of isntructors use a micrphone.  I personally prefer it, as it is nice to actually hear what the instructor is saying.

In my experience, most gyms don’t provide their own microphones and when they do, you might not even want to use them.  One gym provided a receiver as well as a headset.  Yes, one headset to be shared amongst all the instructors.  They suggested you have your own spit-guard (my words, not theirs) and change them out before class.  Like that would make it better.  It was a gross idea and no one used it.  At another gym, they had a microphone stand positioned at the front of the handlebars.  This was also awkward because you kind of had to lean forward from any position to have your mouth near the microphone.  Gyms are strange.

So long story short, I have my own microphone.  I’ve used quite a few over the years and found that no matter what, something seems to break right around the year/year and a half mark.  It is for that reason that I don’t think it’s worth spending +$200 for a microphone.  And while it can be deducted on your taxes, it’s still coming out of my pocket.

My last mic just died, as I mentioned, so I finally bit the bullet and replaced it.

Since I have been asked about my mic before, I figured I’d just share the details here.

This is the SAMSON Stage 55 wireless headset microphone system.

I bought mine from Sam Ash for $129.  This is the system I have purchased 75% of the time.

This time however, I purchased the 2 year extended warranty in hopes that the next issue won’t result in me having to purchase a new system.

For any instructor friends, do you use a mic?  What kind?
For non instructors, do your instructors wear a mic?  Do you prefer it?

Two days

It’s Thursday!

I took yesterday as a rest day.  My alarm went off Wednesday morning at 5:15a, as it does every morning.  And like I am most mornings, I was awake.  I got up to pee and managed to talk myself out of going to the gym.  My logic:  I needed a rest day.  Plus, the same instructor teaches the Wednesday and Friday boxing classes, so if I chose Thursday as my rest it would be too repetitive.  I guess I did a good job of convincing myself because I got back in to bed.

This morning getting to the gym was non negotiable.  The alarm went off at 5:15a and I got up and headed to a kickboxing class at 6a.  It was good.  Kickboxing is not my favorite, but there wasn’t a ton of kicking.  I didn’t feel particularly strong this AM, but I faked it and of course post-class, I was glad I went.

Last night after work I did take a nice walk with the Minnie though, so there was some movement and possibly the smallest sweat being broken.  DJ had softball practice and then brought home dinner from my favorite Greek place with the delicious salad.  Yum!

At lunch yesterday I hit up the mall.  It was a nice day so I figured I’d spend my lunch hour inside, away from natural light.  Appreciate the sarcasm?  There were two actual reasons.  1) I had a 40% off coupon for the Loft and 2) I have a bachelorette party to attend next weekend and realized I have nothing to wear.  Well, after my trip to the mall, I still had nothing to wear.  Not a successful trip.

I’m thinking i’m going to use Rent the Runway for the bach party.  I found a dress I really like for $50, so I think it’s a go.  Right now i’m just waiting on confirmation of just how formal everyone will be and then I plan on ordering.  I actually left the dress in my cart over night due to my indecision and they sent me a coupon this morning.  LOVE that.

Looking back at this post, I’ve done a really good job of flipping back and forth between today and yesterday  as well as jumping around with the events of the day.  Sorry if I’m making you dizzy. 🙂

Back to today…

No real plans other than another nice walk with dog-face this evening.  And of course the usual wishing away the work day.  Non-stop fun here, I tell you!  If I’m energetic post-work, I may throw in a quick run, but we’ll see.

Thanks to any of you who commented on my GPS watch post.  If you haven’t yet, but have helpful information, feel free as I see all comments even if they’re not on the current post.

On a side note, I’m seeing some awesome traffic on other blog faves when they do a giveaway, so I’m going to try to put something together.  Stay tuned for that.

Have a great Thursday!  (sorry, no pictures today)

GPS Watch

I’m thinking about getting a GPS watch for running (or biking).  I’d like to think that by buying something like this, I’ll be more committed to running.

I know everyone loves the big hunking Garmin, but dropping several hundred is just not an option right now.

However I do know that Garmin has a more affordable option; as does Timex.  I wondered if any of you had any thoughts on either.

The Garmin Forerunner 10 – Retails about $125

The Timex Marathon Watch – Found the blue one on Amazon for $71

Neither of them have a foot pod, so it seems like both focus on average speed, not actual speed.  I know i’m slow, so average would probably be fine.

Do you use either of these?  Do you recommend another brand?

I’ve used Timex heart-rate monitors in the past and I was always pleased with them.

Thanks in advance for any input!

Have you seen this on facebook?

Here’s the full story that goes with it.

As some of you know, I was 1/2 mile from the finish line when the explosion went off. I had no idea what was going on until I finally stopped and asked someone. Knowing that my family was at the finish line waiting for me, I started panicking, trying to call them. Diverted away from the finish line, I started walking down Mass Ave towards Symphony Hall still not knowing where my family was. Right before the intersection of Huntington, I was able to get in touch with Bryan and found out he was with my family and they were safe. I was just so happy to hear his voice that I sat down and started crying. Just couldn’t hold it back. At that moment, a couple walking by stopped. The woman took the space tent off her husband, who had finished the marathon, and wrapped it around me. She asked me if I was okay, if I knew where my family was. I reassured her I knew where they were and I would be ok. The man then asked me if I finished to which I nodded “no.” He then proceeded to take the medal off from around his neck and placed it around mine. He told me “you are a finisher in my eyes.” I was barely able to choke out a “thank you” between my tears.

Odds are I will never see this couple again, but I’m reaching out with the slim chance that I will be able to express to them just what this gesture meant to me. I was so in need of a familiar face at that point in time. This couple reassured me that even though such a terrible thing had happened, everything was going to be ok.

This definitely speaks to the good in people.  Love it.

Serious/mushy/inspirational stuff aside…

Class recap from last night.  Class was good.  It was a smaller group, but we worked hard.

I used this ride.

spin - dont back down

Or rather, I used a version of this.  I think this was the 60 minute version so the 45 minute version was a little different   I didn’t use the song I so cleverly called “Can’t Remember – oops”, or “Switch”, or “Open Your Eyes”.  By removing switch I essentially took out the recovery, which was tough.  I do think I had a sprint song in it’s place, but I can’t recall.  I’ll try to update this post later in the day when I can grab my ipod.

The premise of the ride is to build up the hill to 8/10 and then hold it there, doing sprints as well as seated and standing climbs.  It really requires you to dig deep and not back down.  While tough, it served it’s purpose well.

When I got home we ordered Django Unchained.  We started it around 8:30p though so I knew I wasn’t going to make it through the whole movie.  Although I have to say that I did like what I saw of it.  I appreciated the random music, camera angles, and occasionally funny lines.  Have you seen it?  What did you think?

I’m taking a rest day today and plan to take a nice walk with Minnie Dog this afternoon.  Any good/fun plans by you?

We’ve all seen the news, the pictures, the videos.  We’ve also all seen the signs of support across the country.

While I could write a whole post about what happened yesterday, I know we’re all thinking about it anyway, so why not attempt to resume some normalcy.  Sometimes a little distraction is just what you need.

So I will ramble…  🙂

Work is a pretty unpleasant place lately.  The mood is really lackluster and yesterday specifically, quite a few people were out, so the office was even quieter than usual.

In a rebellious moment, I decided that during my lunch break I’d go to the gym.  Imagine that!  I think we get 45 minutes, but to my knowledge most people take an hour.  Most days I don’t even leave for lunch, so I kind of felt like it wasn’t that bad.  I figured I could get there and back in just over an hour.

Only issue was, I had left my headphones at home, so I had to add a trip to CVS into the mix.

So I finally made it to the gym and it felt good.  Good to work out but also just a little bad-ass to be there in the middle of the day.  I ran a mile, hopped off and did a bunch of pushups, then ran a half a mile, and hopped off again to do more pushups and some planks. I had every intention of doing another half mile but then I ran in to a trainer/friend I hadn’t seen in ages.  The best laid plans…  So we chatted and I gave up on the last half mile.

I changed back into my work clothes, kind of gross, I know, and then headed back to the office.  An hour and a half later (oops!), I was back at my desk.  If I hadn’t run in to my friend it probably would have been closer to the hour fifteen mark, but what can you do?

As a disclaimer, I wouldn’t do this on a normal day, but yesterday it just worked.

Class tonight and I’m hoping to select my ride this afternoon, so I’ll post it later today or tomorrow.

Back to the grind.

Take a moment to appreciate what you have and just how fragile everything is.

A successful weekend and a special day

Today is a very special day.

Today is my parent’s 40th wedding anniversary.  Holy cow!!

In honor of this milestone, my sister and I sent them to see Book of Mormon on Broadway on Saturday and then threw a surprise party for them at their house when they returned.

The past week was incredibly busy with party prep and last minute details, but it was all so very worth it when they walked in to the house and were surrounded by their friends and family.  I’d say it was a success.

Such a gracious host.

My sister, my uncle, and I looking out the window for their car.
Kind of speaks for itself.

While it turned out they weren’t fully surprised (they were suspicious and looking for clues), it was still a great party and a wonderful occasion to celebrate.

So after a weekend with no gym visits and lots of eating, it’s time for me to crack the whip and get back to something.

I’ve got my sights set on running and am hoping I can make things happen.  So now I’m off to see what I can find via Google in terms of running/training plans.  Will keep you posted.

Hope you had a great weekend!
Can you imagine being married for 40 years?  I can’t!

Quick Friday Post

It’s Friday!!!  Hooray, yahoo, whoopee, wowza!!! (you get the idea, right?)

This has not been my best week, but it is what it is, and at least it’s just about done with.

The gym was pretty much a fail this week but I do hope to correct that next week.  I’ll put a positive spin on this week by mentioning that my back/shoulder issue is acting up so perhaps the rest is a good thing.  Convincing?

I’m not teaching tomorrow but will go in to more detail on that on Monday.  I have a ton of things to do tomorrow before 11a so it’s somewhat unlikely that this weekend will also be a gym-wash.  Oh well.

I really just wanted to tell everyone to have a great weekend!!  Catch ya on the flip side.
