I’m here

I’m here!

Thankfully my immediate area didn’t suffer any serious damage.  Aside from losing power, we’re hanging in there.  Unfortunately many areas were not quite so lucky.

I’ve had no power since Monday evening, my parents (on Long Island) have had no power  since the same time, and my sister (upper-east side of NYC) has power.

However given the destruction I’ve heard about, we should be thankful that all we’re dealing with is a loss of power.

Due to no power or cell service, I haven’t seen a ton of the damage, but what I’ve heard on the radio is not pretty.

I hope everyone is safe and thankful for what they do have.  I’ll get back to regular posts once the dust has settled.

Hunkered down

Unless you live under a rock, you’ve surely heard all about Sandy, the hurricane rapidly making her way towards the east coast.

Fun times folks, let me tell you.

I’m working from home today as the office is closed.  Mass transit has been shut down and they’re starting to shut down some highways as well.  Coastal areas have been evacuated and here we sit and wait.

I live on the top of a hill, which is good for flooding purposes.  However there are lots of trees in this area which isn’t so good in terms of the possibility of a power outage.  The local news showed every town listed as “likely” for power outages.

So here I sit.  Lots of things are on-hold pending the outcome of the storm.  I will post when I’m able.

Be safe wherever you are!!

lunchtime on a Friday

More often than I’d like, I don’t leave the office at lunch.  It stinks, but it is what it is.  While I can’t always do it, I definitely recognize the value of getting out at lunch, even if it’s just getting away from your desk for a bit.  I think it’s also much healthier than being sedentary all day.

Today I got out.

My goal was to hit up Michael’s for some arts and crafts supplies for the marathon and then hit up the supermarket for some ingredients for this weekends baking.  Michael’s happens to be in the same parking lot as Party City which is not where you want to be this week.  Party City turns in to your Halloween headquarters (their words), aka a zoo.  Needless to say, I couldn’t find a parking spot and didn’t want to do more than two laps of the lot to try.

Stop and Shop is technically in the same shopping center but it’s downstairs and has a totally different lot which always has plenty of parking.  I guess I could have walked to Michael’s but I was being lazy (although it would have been a long walk with a hill).

This weekend I’m going to be a baking beast.  I have to make something for a party tomorrow night and then on Sunday I’m making my stuff for the bake sale on Tuesday.

My cart was kind of embarrassing, or really awesome, depending on how you look at it.

2 boxes of cake mix (yellow and white)
a 2 pound bag of powdered sugar
a big jar of Fluff
chocolate chips
sweetened condensed milk
honeycrisp apples (a snack for me)
sushi (lunch for me)

The lady behind me actually commented on my goods.  This doesn’t count ingredients that I already have at home (peanut butter, eggs) and butter (which was on sale at another store).  Quite the healthy shopping trip!

For the party tomorrow night I’m going to try this recipe.  I wanted something easy so I’m hoping for the best.  For some reason I wanted one of those recipes where you use a cake mix and doctor it up.

Peanut Butter Bars

  • 1 (18.25-ounce) package yellow cake mix
  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1 cup chunky peanut butter
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, melted
  • 1 (10-ounce) package peanut butter chips
  • 1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degree F.
  2. In a large bowl, combine cake mix, eggs, peanut butter, and butter; mix well. Press half the mixture onto bottom of an ungreased 9″ x 13″ baking dish.  Bake 10 minutes.
  3. Remove peanut butter base from oven, top with peanut butter chips, and drizzle with sweetened condensed milk. Crumble remaining peanut butter mixture then sprinkle over top. Bake 25 to 30 minutes, or until golden.
  4. Allow to cool completely then cut into bars.

I will let you know how it turns out (hopefully good since I won’t get to test it out beforehand).

Any fun weekend plans??

A collection of photos that aren’t mine

Clearly I didn’t get the memo about having a blog with focus.  But on the flip side a blog is supposed to represent who you are and things you love.  I am random and I love that!

Today, a few pictures that made me smile.

an oldie but a goodie, always makes me laugh
i’m a sucker for a dog with a cone to begin with
at an airport in Brussels I think

such skill!

I love how something as simple as a picture can bring a smile to someone’s face.

I thought today was going to be rough.  My dad is having surgery (should be out shortly), so please send some good thoughts.  Plus my day started with a meeting with my boss and how something like that goes is anyone’s guess.

The meeting went well and now I’m just waiting for final word that the procedure went well also.

So here’s something to make you smile on a Thursday.  Have a GREAT day!!

This and that and more of that

I’m pretty sure I never posted my ride from Saturday (can’t seem to remember things lately), so here it is.  Not new, but a solid standby.

And here’s the ride I used last night.

Now that that’s out-of-the-way. 🙂

Let’s get random…

Is anyone watching the Voice?  I watch it on DVR (thank goodness).  All I want to see is the performances and honestly it’s about 25% of the whole show.  Thank you DVR for realizing the value of my time!

But anyway, I think it sucks.  Yes, I’m a little tone-deaf, but DJ is not, and we’ve both agreed that for the most part not one performance has been good.  A couple have been OK but I definitely haven’t been blown away.  Anyone agree/disagree?

Back in August for my birthday BBQ, my sister’s friend made the most amazing cupcakes ever.  After hounding her for a few months I finally got the recipe and wow, it’s involved.  Thankfully the cupcakes themselves use a cake mix, but you then have to make filling and icing.  Quite the undertaking!

We’re doing a fundraising bake sale next week at work so I’m going to give them a go since it is for a good cause.

So I guess I’m not as random and all over the place today as I thought.  Ooops.  I’m fried.

Enjoy your evening!

Who’s opinionated?

Definitely not me!  Yeah right.

I’m opinionated and stubborn, but somehow I pull it off in a lovely fashion.  Just my opinion.  Hahahaha.  (can you tell it’s been a long day?)

I’m going to apologize in advance for this post as some of you may be offenders.  Let me just say that you can wear whatever you want, I will still like you. 🙂

I’ll just blurt it out…

I hate leggings.

I think they’re the equivalent of sweatpants (just tight) and while fine for the occasional lounging about, they are not and should not be worn as actual pants as part of an “outfit”.

I get it, who doesn’t want to put on comfy stretchy pants?  But just because you want to do something doesn’t mean you do.  I’d love to wear my fleece pants and slippers all day, but do I?  NO.  I suck it up and put on real pants  and shoes even though they are definitely not as comfortable.  It’s called being an adult (not a college-student).

I’m semi-OK with leggings being worn as tights.  In other words with something the length equivalent of a dress over them.  I get that, leggings are more comfortable than tights and kind of do the same thing.

Do not show me your butt.  Very few butts look good in leggings.  The Giants game was proof of that.  Your butt should not be eating your pants.  Your pants shouldn’t be made of material thin enough that your butt can try to eat them.

If you wear leggings and love them, I respect your choice and I still like you 🙂

23 PAWS – My canine model

I managed to miss out on 23 PAWS last month.  I had every intention but sometimes a good intention just isn’t enough.

I’m here today although I don’t have a ton to say, I did want to participate.

About Minnie girl and pictures…she is the most uncooperative subject ever!  As soon as the camera comes out she decides it’s time to move. It’s not like she bolts, she moves just enough to make pictures blurry or of the back of her head.

While out for a walk the other day, the lighting was great and the leaves on the sidewalk were really picturesque.  I thought to myself that it would make a great background in a picture of Minnie.  Simple enough.

Here we go:

And finally (after even more than that), one acceptable photo.

the instagram version

Clearly I need to start bribing her with treats (or something).  She’s too pretty to not be photographed 🙂

Sleepy Monday

I’m tired.  Very.  Very very.  I don’t want to go to work.  I want to say in bed.  All day.

Anyone else feeling similarly this Monday morning?  I went to bed by 10, but after an exhausting weekend apparently the 8-9 hours of sleep just wasn’t enough.  It was a great weekend though, so I will soldier through my Monday while visions of my bed dance in my head. 🙂

Friday night I took the Minner for her usual walk.  On that walk we visited with my friend who watched her while we were away.  This friend casually mentioned that she was going to be fostering two puppies and that they were being dropped off shortly.  Of course I just had to hang around for that.

Minnie checking out these little girls.

DJ happened to drive by while I was chatting with them (and holding a puppy) so I walked over to his car with the pup.  This prompted him (after saying “no puppies”) to pull over and hang out for a bit.  It was lovely.  Then headed home.  It was 7pm but it was so dark that it felt more like 10pm.  Dinner was Chinese and I went with a big noodle soup bowl, perfect!

Saturday class was good.  After class I grabbed the Minnie and we headed to CT Pitbull Awareness Day.  It was about 30 miles away but there was traffic for no reason.  I blame the pretty foliage.  We got to the park where it was being held and there were lots of cars, so that was a good sign.  There were quite a few booths with rescue groups or merchandise and there were TONS of dogs.  Mainly pits but not exclusively.  It was wonderful.  Beautiful dogs and mostly all good temperaments.  They had a costume contest so there were lots of pups in costume.  It was great.  I didn’t take any pictures because I didn’t want to be the weirdo photographing stranger’s dogs.  While initially super excited, Minnie ended up a bit overwhelmed.  She did well and behaved but you could clearly tell that it was a bit much for her. She had zero interest in treats or water.  We hung around for about an hour or so and then hit the road.  She promptly passed out in the car.

Got home, hit the supermarket and they did some cleaning and baking.

Was getting picked up at 7 for round two of my do-good weekend.  At about 6:30 I made sure that DJ knew where the tickets for Sunday were.  Long story short, they were missing.  Frantic searching around the house but then I had to leave.  He found them after I left, in a trash bag in the garage.  Oops.

So round two was a Harvest Fest to benefit PAWS.  While it had the potential to be an awesome event it wasn’t as popular as it should have been.  I’m not sure if blame falls on the bar or the organization but either way it was a little disappointing.  But, we went and we showed our support.  We got to taste a bunch of beers and ended up drinking for free, so that was nice.  I was home by about 9:30. hehehe.

Sunday the alarm went off at 6a (not fun!).  DJ started to work on frying up some chicken cutlets.  I took care of dog stuff and cleaning out a cooler.  We left around 8:30ish and made great time getting to the stadium.  We met up with our crew from Green Bay and had a great time tailgating and hanging out.  The weather was perfect!

The Giants play at Metlife Stadium, hence Snoopy. I LOVE Snoopy.

The game itself was a good one.  RGIII definitely made the Giants work for it, but we overcame and Cruz saved the day in the 4th and led us to the win.  Fun fun fun!  Hung out in the lot for a bit post-game and watched some of the Jets game.  (The tailgate crew has a flat screen in the trunk of their Jeep.)  Left around 6p figuring we’d miss all the traffic.

Got to see them filming the post-game show.

WRONG.  We sat in traffic for over an hour to go maybe 10 miles.  It was miserable.  No wait, worse than miserable since I was driving and DJ was sleeping.  Must have been nice.  It took us about 2.5 hours to get home when it had only taken about 45 minutes to get there.  Yuck.  Needless to say by the time I got home I was done.  Hung out for a bit and then called it a night.

And now it’s Monday.

Any fun weekends out there?  How did your teams do?  Any exciting plans this week?

A filter for my brain

Can you believe it, two posts in one day?

I’m having one of those days where I just feel the need to get things out of my head and on to paper (or a screen in this case).

There is so much running through my head and I’d love to be able to throw on a filter and only think about one thing at a time.

The good stuff first…the weekend!

Tomorrow is class and then after it is turning in to a day of animal advocacy.

First I’m going here:

Yes, it’s a bit of a distance away, but it’s a Saturday and it’s a nice thing to do with Minnie.  Plus the organization we got her from will be there, as will a few volunteers that I know.  She may even get to reunite with Buttons who she lived with for a short time.

Then in the early evening I’m going to head to this:

Another pet related event, a benefit at a local bar to support a local rescue group, PAWS (pet animal welfare society).  I figured it would be nice to get out for a bit and to support a good cause.

We’re going to go early because on Sunday I’m going to be seeing blue…

First game for me of the season and I’m excited.  The weather is going to be perfect for football.  Plus we’re going to meet up with our tailgating buddies from Green Bay, which is awesome.  (Back story: when we went to green bay for the playoff game I had spent some time on the Giants message boards and found a crew that was driving to WI for the game.  They were planning a huge tailgate and said we were welcome to come.  They were such nice people and we had a blast.  DJ stayed in touch with the main guy.)  Plus, the Giants are playing the Redskins…hello RGIII.

Of course I want my Giants to win but I really like RGIII.  Have you seen his socks?

So it should be a great weekend and I’m looking forward to it.

What I’m not looking forward to?  Monday.  Ugh.

I’ve been having some job dissatisfaction issues.  To keep it kosher I’ll just say that it’s really tied to one person and his/her attitude towards me.  It’s unfortunate but for the time being it is what it is.

It really stinks when job satisfaction falls.  We all spend so much time at our jobs, so when we’re not happy it inadvertently seeps in to other areas of our life.  Grrrr.

Big picture…positivity.  Enough from me.

Enjoy the weekend!!

Halloween odds and ends

I used to love Halloween.

I still like it, but I like it more for the g-rated activities (and pumpkins) than anything else.  I hate to go out to bars on Halloween and see girls dressed like, well, you know.

Every year I do a Halloween spin ride and wear a silly costume to teach.  Last year I wore a devil costume and the year before that I was another instructor (he had no clue).

This year Halloween is on a Wednesday.  I have my (full) class on Saturday and my (empty) class on Tuesday.  Tuesday makes more sense for the ride, but I think it would be more fun Saturday.  What do you think?  I’m leaning towards Saturday.

DJ bought me a fun little Halloween treat.

Have you ever seen these?  Apparently they come with a piping bag and directions on how to make the icing look like a brain.  I’ll post pictures when I make these.

Since I’m back in an office this year, I might also have to make my witches finger cookies.  Recipe here.

We can also dress up for work.  Honestly, my motivation is low.  So while I feel like maybe I should dress up, I’d have no clue what to wear.  Any suggestions for an easy and office appropriate costume?

Don’t even get me started on the fact that I have a party to go to.  How about no costume and I just say i’m lame. 😀
