Happy Thursday!

This week has moved quickly and slowly at the same time.  Weird!  I’m starting to get a bit nervous about starting the new job on Monday.  I think I’m just nervous about the new routine, so I know I’ll be fine.

So the verdict on the sneakers (because I know you’re sitting at the edge of your seat) is that I LOVE them.   They’re super cushy and actually make me feel light on my feet, which is unheard of.  I will say that the traction is just so so, but for treadmill or road running they’re fine.  I wore them to a boxing class and had a little trouble stepping up on to the flat side of the bosu for squats, but I dealt.

Even though I’ve only worn them twice, so far I’d definitely recommend them.  So cushy!

Yesterday my mother came to visit so we did lunch and some shopping.  It was a lovely day.  Today I have lunch with a friend and then class tonight.

I posted this question on Facebook but since my readers (if there are still any) are a different bunch, I figured I’ll put it here too.  Not sure how many of you do the whole manicure thing, but I’m trying to get feedback on Nailene SenastioNails which is an at home gel manicure kit.  If you’ve used it or know of anyone who has, let me know.

Off to do a few things.  It’s looking like tonight’s class won’t be a new ride, but that could change.  We’ll see.

Ugly or cool?

Happy Monday!

Since I had to send my laptop back (it was my work computer) I’m now limited to the use of my desktop.  Not a big deal, just not as convenient and this computer is a bit slower.  As a result, I may not post as frequently this week, and then next week the new job starts, so I guess we’ll see how things play out.

How were your weekends?

My weekend was GREAT!  Or rather, Saturday was great.

Saturday started off with spin.  I used the same ride as this past Thursday but eliminated the Whitney Houston and Bruce Springsteen songs.  I also went for a run on Friday and used the ride as my playlist.  I’m a fan!  Loving that Havana Blue/Pitbull song.  Loving.

Saturday afternoon DJ and I headed in to NYC to meet up with my sister and hang out for a bit.  I was taking her to dinner that night for her bday.  She’s turning 30 on May 2nd.  Little did she know, I had planned a surprise party for her after dinner. 

Dinner was OK food and atmosphere wise, but great company wise.  After we headed to a bar to “meet one of DJs lacrosse friends”.  I had arranged for almost all of her friends to meet us there.  The bar had two floors so I secured the 2nd level.  So when she got to the top of the stairs, everyone was standing there and yelled SURPRISE!  She was shocked and started crying.  Always the sign of a good surprise!

Rewinding a bit…
On Friday I hit up Sports Authority bc I need new running sneakers.  I think I probably tried on almost every pair they had.  Nada.
So when we were in the city I kept my eyes open as well.  I ended up buying a pair of Brooks.  I’ve never ran in Brooks before but I know that in years past they have gotten some good reviews.

I think they’re cool looking, DJ thinks they look like “old people shoes”.  My sister said she saw his point but it didn’t bother her as much.

What do you think?

I promise, I won’t be offended.  I have to try them on again and make sure that they are in fact comfortable.

Now on a side note…I’m going to vent.

I’m about to hit the gym in a few and am totally frustrated that I belong to 4 gyms and can’t find a class I want to take at any.  One gym just has bad instructors…and the others just don’t have anything that interests me.  Frustrating!

But now I’m off to find something to do.

TJs items of the moment

I love Trader Joe’s!!

I could probably just end this post there.  But first, does anyone NOT love TJs?

I usually have one or two items from there that I wonder how I lived without.  I thought I’d take a few minutes today to shout out a few of my current favorites (be warned, it’s more than 2).

Chocolate Covered Pretzel Slims – Yum!! – Perfect combo of sweet and salty, plus it’s dark chocolate so I like to think that it’s heart healthy.  7 pieces have 190 calories and you can totally do with fewer than 7.

Peanut Butter & Oat Bars – You may have read a previous post about the chocolate chip brownie version of these bars here.  I totally thought they were the cats meow until I found these.  These are the perfect combination of peanut butteryness and oatyness.  They actually taste like something you’d make yourself, and that’s always a great thing!  I’m too lazy to check the box right now, but I think they’re right around 140 calories too.


I was a hardcore oatmeal lover for years and I think I wore myself out on it.  I ended up very sick of it and never wanting to eat it.  I’d say I took a nice long hiatus before venturing back in to the world of oats.  Still not ready for full immersion, this caught my eye when I was at TJ’s the other day.  While instant oatmeal isn’t as good for you as the original, it will do in a pinch.  The cranberry is just tart and sweet enough to give it an excellent flavor.  While one packet isn’t quite enough for a filling breakfast, it is close and you can easily pair it with a piece of fruit and be good to go.

Some other staples that aren’t pictured…
Meatless Meatballs – I’ve been eating these for years.  I actually cook them and then mash them up and add to sauce (voila, faux bolognese).
Peach Salsa – yum!
Whole Wheat Gnocchi – just as dense as gnocchi tend to be, but I like the fiber content

Here comes the change…

I’m feeling good; really optimistic!  😀

Today is my last day of work at the current job.  However it’s very surreal and anticlimactic because I work from home.  Normally a last day is somewhat emotional, what with having to wrap things up and say goodbyes.  Because I work in solitary confinement alone, there’s no one to say goodbye to and no office to walk away from.  At the end of the day I’ll box up my laptop and blackberry and take it to UPS.  That’s it.

I’m OK with it though.

As of today at 5pm-ish, I’m job less for one week.  I’m looking forward to taking a week to just relax and enjoy myself.  No obligations, no guilt.

Next week my mom is going to come up for a visit and I hope to fill the rest of the week with other enjoyable activities.  Fingers crossed for some sun!

I figure I may pick up a few spin classes if the opportunity arises, but we’ll see.

Since working from home (we’re talking months now), I’ve been somewhat under-hydrated.  I can’t explain it, but I drank much more water when I was in an office.  That said, I’ve been trying to drink more water since I can see the under-hydration in my skin and I don’t like that.  Yesterday was probably the most successful I’ve been.  I drank about 4 glasses in advance of my 6:45p class.

Well, let me just say that more water definitely equals more sweat and it was GREAT!  Hopefully I can maintain this since everything just feels much better when you’re hydrated.

Class last night was good.  It’s school vacation time here so there were a few less people, but overall attendance was good.

Somehow I managed to throw together a new ride yesterday so that’s what I used.  I liked most of the songs but also knew that there were quite a few that would be new to the riders.  Sometimes that’s good, sometimes it’s not.  I didn’t get much feedback on the class, but I think it was good.  I’m going to tweak it for my 45 minute class tomorrow.

I’m on the fence about Seven Nation Prayer, I just can’t decide if I like it or not.  I think it may be a tad boring, but we’ll see if it grows on me.

Another note…Touch Me but Katharine McPhee is impossible to find since I don’t think it’s been released yet.  Somehow I had a contact who had the song but I’m guessing that it was taken from youtube or something.  It’s from SMASH and I’ve been wanting this song FOREVER.  I love it!!

Marathon

Edited:  OK, so I reread the post and it isn’t really that long, so maybe not quite a marathon…maybe a 10K?  Also, the second spin ride is new.  I created it at the beginning of March but haven’t posted it on here, so it is in fact new to the blog.

Marathon as in a long post…not an actual marathon 😉

So first…some good news…
I accepted a new position, so I miraculously will not end up on unemployment this time.
I’m excited and can’t wait to see what the future with this company holds.  Plus I’m really excited to be back in an office.  I know people thinking working from home sounds amazing, but the truth is, it definitely isn’t for everyone (including me).
I have one week off between jobs which is perfect.  Then I work for 3 weeks and am then on vacation.  Since vacation has been planned for months, the new company was very understanding.

Question for my dog owner friends who work out…
How do you manage having a dog home all day and working out?  I’m already getting anxious about this one.
I feel horribly that she’ll be crated all day but at the same time can not give up my workouts.  Any ideas/thoughts are appreciated.
I’m thinking maybe I can workout in the morning but am also thinking it will require some coordination with the sig other.  It all just makes me anxious.

And now spin…

My cold was full-blown on April 1st and I’d say that only last Saturday (April 14th) was I able to pretty much fully teach my class.  It stunk!

I taught last Saturday and again this morning (6am).  I’ll teach my usual class tomorrow night and my Saturday class and then call it a week.  Here are a few of the playlist.  Sorry they’re nothing new, I haven’t had any time (or motivation) to do new rides.  I’m hoping to remedy that later today or tomorrow.

There are no times listed for the first half of the ride because I used my nicely faded/remixed Spin Odyssey track.  The first 7 working songs (excluding the WU) were my ride at Spin O.  I just love how they fade in to one another.  I think my portion was about 25 minutes or so though.

So I just realized that I didn’t spell check so errors are underlined in red, oops.  Forgive me?

And now I’m off to relax a bit before working on motivating to get some new tunes.

back on track

It’s so sad to see the little visitors graphic at the top of my page go dooooown. Then again, that’s what happens when you don’t post. 😉

But I’m here now and I’m feeling like maybe now my life will get back to semi-normal.

It’s seems like the blog world has lots of good news today (or in the next few days).  I don’t have any of that yet, but I’m encouraged and optimistic that the good is coming.

I finally shook my never-ending cold.  My nose still runs a bit and on occasion my emphysema cough shows up, but for the most part I’m back to normal.

To test this out, I hit the gym yesterday at lunch time.  I hadn’t been to the gym since last Saturday and that was hardly a gym visit since I taught and only rode about 20% of the time.  Before that, I hadn’t done a real workout since April 1st.  Cray.

I honestly didn’t know what to expect yesterday, especially since I was recovering from a chest cold.  But I figured I’d try my usual mid-day routine and hope for the best.

I started with a walking warmup on the treadmill and since that felt OK, I transitioned to a run.  I ran 1 mile which is my usual pre-strength cardio.  I started at 5.5 to ease in to things and ended at 7.5.  Goal attained.  I then hit the arc trainer for 15 minutes.  I put 20 in to the machine but after 15 I was feeling pretty spent.

Tangent:  I used to use the arc trainer and focus on resistance.  Then a trainer came up to me and told me that it’s cardio, so instead of jacking up the resistance, I should focus on the pace and keeping my heart rate up.  Since he told me that (years ago) I strive to keep the pace over 160 and depending on the day vary the resistance.  Do you use the Arc trainer?  How do you do it?

Once that was done I did a quick TRX workout and called it a day.  I know I’ve said it before, but I really love the TRX.  Plus it always amazes me that in less than 30 minutes I can fatigue my muscles and feel sore the next day.  Love.

So I’m off to do some important stuff, but I’m teaching tonight at 6:45p, tomorrow at 6a, and then my usual Saturday class at 10a.  I will do my best to get back to the guts of this blog and post some music.

Happy Monday!

I hope everyone had a lovely weekend and a nice holiday if you celebrated one.

My weekend was good, but very hectic; lots of driving.

Friday night was passover dinner with my mother’s side of the family.  There were 14 of us total, which for my small family is pretty large.  It was lovely.  Plus Minnie came with us and everyone enjoyed meeting the newest member of the family.  I think she was really happy about having a fenced in yard.  Unfortunately we drove back to CT on Friday night after dinner which made it a looong day.

Saturday morning I taught.  It didn’t go very well for me, but overall the class was fine.  It was my first workout of any sort in 6 days, however my cold was still present which made it very tough.  I did do some work, but spent most of the ride just coaching.  Class was not full but I know that was due to the holiday weekend.  Frustrated with still feeling sick, I went to the doctor after class.  What I learned was that the typical cold lasts 7-10 days.  I guess in the past I’ve just been lucky.  I was told that it really was just a viral cold and that I probably had a few more days left on it.  She gave me a script for antibiotics in case it manifested in to a sinus infection but ideally I wouldn’t need to fill it.  I really didn’t know that colds hang around for that long.

Back to NY Saturday afternoon for dinner with my dad’s family.  There were only 8 of us this time and it was another very enjoyable evening.  This time though, I stayed over in NY which made a big difference.

On Sunday we did an Easter deck party BBQ.  3 couples cooked up goodies and shared.  The other people even did an easter egg hunt in the morning for the kids in the complex, which was cute (although I was happy to be inside for that).  It was a nice day but with a bit too much eating.  Last night I felt stuffed and yucky.  I guess I ate more than I thought.

So now you know way more than you probably wanted to know about my weekend. 🙂

Bring on the new week!  I’m ready!!

I just had to do it

I caved and requested a sub for my class tonight.

While I’m definitely getting better, my cough still sounds nasty and it hurts.  Sitting on the couch or walking are do-able.  When I say do-able, I mean that I still cough, but only about one cough every 5 or so minutes.

I’m pretty sure that getting out of breath or even just having to speak very loudly might up that frequency.  So I put up a request for a sub, figuring that if it hadn’t been covered by noon, I’d just do it.  Well, someone snatched it up.

I really miss working out but am hoping that this week off will just make me that much more excited to get back to it.  I still don’t really consider myself an “athlete”, but as most athlete’s know, being forced to dial things back is hard, though often it is necessary.

I plan to teach on Saturday morning, so hopefully by then I’m feeling that much better.

I got my errands done but now have a bunch of things to take care of around the house.  Plus, I’ll take the pup for a walk so that I don’t completely become a sedentary piece of crap. 🙂

Pack a day

I sound like a smoker.  Note that I only said sound.

My cold has moved itself along and settled in my chest.  My cough is UGLY.  I sound like a smoker.  It’s gross.

As you may have heard, the general rule for working out with a cold is that if it’s above the shoulders you’re OK, but if it’s below, your best bet is to sit it out.  Since my chest is below my shoulders, I would fall in to the latter category.

I taught sick on Sunday but haven’t stepped foot in the gym since.  My plan was originally to work out today but with this cough I just couldn’t imagine it being pretty.  So instead I took Minnie for a nice walk.  At least that got the blood flowing.

I have to teach tomorrow night and I am really hoping that the cough improves.  If it doesn’t I may just have to teach off the bike.  Not ideal, but a girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do.  Right?

With so many people getting colds, one thing that drives me nuts is when people say that they’re sick due to the weather.  Germs cause colds, weather does not.  However, as told to me by a doctor today; the weather has played a part since the warmer temps let the germs survive, while the extreme cold would have killed many of them off.  Interesting.  That makes perfect sense but to make myself feel better I’m going to assume that most people who blame the weather don’t know that.

So that’s that.  I’m off to relax on the couch.  Tomorrow needs to be a productive day…on the list…supermarket (making passover friendly brownies, if you want the recipe, let me know), goodwill (i have bags and bags of stuff in the garage), cvs (my dog has dry skin and needs to take fish oil, ha!).  I know there are a few others, but those are the ones coming to mind.  Should keep me busy.

Monday

I had a great idea for a post and now that I’m ready to type, I can’t seem to think of it.  How annoying is that?

So I will just ramble instead.  Happy Monday!  I hope your weekends were lovely.

My weekend was OK, aside from the fact that I came down with a sore throat in the middle of the day on Saturday.  Really, the middle of the day?  Of course the irony is that I had been given a bunch of goodies that morning (left overs from Spin Odyssey) and one of the bags had a few bags of cough drops.  I was sharing the goodies with the gym members and one asked if they could take the cherry cough drops, to which I said “of course, I rarely get sick”.  A couple of hours later, the sore throat entered.  UGH.

Knock wood, but I really do get sick pretty occasionally.  My sore throat was just that on Saturday, but by Saturday night it was pretty bad.  I slept horribly Saturday night as the congestion started to arrive and woke up Sunday morning feeling less than stellar.  Unfortunately I had to teach at 9:15a and there was no way I was finding a sub.  So off I went.  I sucked it up and aside from a runny nose, clogged ears, and zero energy, it was a success.  Ha!  I did give them a heads up that I was sick and someone told me they wouldn’t have known if I hadn’t said something, which makes me wonder about the energy of other instructors.

When I’m sick or tired (or both!) my energy level is sub par.  For people who have never taken my class to say that it was still good really makes me question the energy of those i’m “competing” with.  anyway…

I’ve mentioned it before, but by boyfriend is an amazing cook.  On Sundays he usually gets super motivated and bangs out some impressive feast.  I mean feast since the boy has no clue of how to cook for 2 people.

That would be a shrimp po’boy with homemade spicy mayo, homemade coleslaw, lettuce, and tomato on ciabatta bread.  The shrimp had a lovely cajun kick and the flavors were awesome.

Yes it was fried and yes I don’t really like mayo, but I went with it and was happy I did.  So delicious!

Since I still haven’t figured out what I wanted to write about, I’ll stop the rambling here.  Hope your week is off to a good start!
